Michigan Faith Leaders Support the EITC to Protect Michigan Kids and Families

May 3, 2011

Dear Governor Snyder,

Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.” (Deuteronomy 15:11)

As faith leaders, we write to express our grave concern about a tax proposal that would hurt the most vulnerable among us – our children. We are talking specifically about changes to Michigan’s Earned Income Tax Credit. We see tax policy as an indication of what is important in our society, and the tax proposal that passed Michigan’s House of Representatives would still cause 14,000 children to fall into poverty.

As members of a civilized society, we are called to help one another. Likewise, our government leaders are called to protect the poor and especially our children. Tax policy is not just fiscal policy, but is also moral policy. The proposed changes to our current tax system would eviscerate the EITC and create further hardship for our state’s poorest families. This is preventable.

There are alternatives to the House-passed proposal that would not cost the state more money and would help the poorest families in our state and their children. We urge you to support an alternative tax proposal that preserves more of the EITC and protects Michigan’s children from poverty.

Please fill in the form below to add your name to the list of Michigan’s faith community leaders calling on Governor Snyder to protect children and families.
